This week, I had the chance to talk to Maarten Zeinstra, from Amsterdam-based think tank Kennisland, to find out more about the project Copyright Exceptions. We already know copyright law is particularly complex, but things do get even more confusing once you look at the different regulations each one of the 28 European Union countries has.

On a completely different side note, I would like to thank to Starfrosch and Musique Libre for helping me out in finding the CC licence of This Mess is Mine release, which allowed me to play it on the show. They are both great resources if you’re into Creative Commons music, so make sure you check them out.

The Free Music Archive is an interactive library of high-quality, legal audio downloads directed by WFMU, the longest-running freeform radio station in the United States.[1] Every mp3 on the Free Music Archive is pre-cleared for certain types of uses that would otherwise be prohibited by copyright laws that were not designed for the digital era. These uses vary and are determined by the rightsholders themselves.[2]

It was founded in 2009 and it’s still running. And now, every Friday, I upload a new record to Free Music Archive. Being a curator there is a fundamental piece of White Market’s quest to spread the word on free music. So, this latest session I had the great pleasure of talking to Cheyenne Hohman, the director of Free Music Archive. Not only did we talk about their work, mission and challenges, we also had time to share some cool tracks and share other thoughts on free culture and copyright. As you may have guessed by now, all the tracks we played today can be found on Free Music Archive.

Make sure you like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter and download their brand new/revamped app, which is available for both iOS and Android.

With some blasts from the past and a few treats, we kept the free music engine running, and delivered another hour of great Creative Commons-licenced tracks. And, on top of all the fun, I’ve set myself quite the challenge: every week White Market will be uploading a new record on Free Music Archive. In case you missed it, here’s our collection soon to be expanded on a weekly basis.
